Ground Up & Rising in the News...

Poor Judas
Ground Up and Rising takes on another controversial play.

Patrice Elizabeth Grell Yursik, Miami New Times

Jose Paredes as Judas Iscariot

Is there any biblical figure more reviled than Judas Iscariot? The name of the disciple who hath betrayed Jesus with a kiss is universally synonymous with all that is evil, self-serving, and traitorous. The Christian world sees Judas as little more than a two-dimensional character, best known for carrying Jesus’ money bag and then cashing the Messiah in for a paltry 30 pieces of silver. Playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis would have us see him a bit differently. His play, The Last Days of Judas Iscariot, considers the prospects of redemption for the Bible’s most infamous sinner. Coming fresh off the topic of Tupac, edgy local theater group Ground Up and Rising is embracing this challenging material for the Florida premiere of this gripping work.

An impressive variety of Carbonell Award-winning actors will step up to the task in Miami Dade College’s M Building, 11011 SW 104th St., Miami. The play premieres tonight at 8 and will run through August 24. Tickets cost $20, $15 for seniors and students. Aug. 15-24, 2008
